Lumber Tycoon 2 is a Roblox game created by Defaultio. It is the sequel to the 2008 classic Lumber Tycoon. It had 10,000 online players on the first day of release for several hours. It is one of the top games on Roblox, and the game that this wiki is about.

As of March 26th, 2023, Lumber Tycoon 2 has accumulated over 1 billion visits with an 87% approval rating, along with 4.2 million favorites. The game has consistently seen over two thousand players playing concurrently since its beta release in August of 2015. The game had reached one billion accumulated visits on March 26th, 2023.

Lumber Tycoon 2 has maintained the same thumbnails since 2015, depicting a player's base before the Mountainside, Swamp, and Ocean were added. This base belongs to the player EpikYummeh, an early tester of the game and a friend of Defaultio's.

Note: Although the place was created on July 30, 2009, official development of the game began around May 29, 2015.[1]

Gameplay[]

The objective of the game is to chop trees, sell wood, and purchase items and equipment. There are vehicles that can transport items and sawmills that increase the value of collected wood. The game has controller and mobile support.

The game has many areas to explore, such as the Volcano, Taiga, and Maze. Players have the ability to create and customize unique structures on their land by utilizing the many blueprints, items and wood types scattered throughout the map.

Harvesting Wood[]

There are many types of trees in the game. To chop down a tree, you must obtain and use an axe. Any player can buy one at the Wood R Us, with the cheapest one being the Basic Hatchet for only $12 Money. Once an axe is obtained, the player can use the left mouse button to swing the axe. If the axe swings at the trunk or branch of the tree, it will leave a black mark. The black mark slowly increases in length into a line as you hit the tree more in the same spot. When the black mark reaches to the other side, the tree falls.

Selling Wood[]

Logs can be dropped off onto the conveyor belts around the right side of Wood R Us for money or can be converted into planks through a sawmill at the player's base and then brought to the exchange to be sold for even more money.

Axes[]

Lumber Tycoon 2 offers a wide variety of axes that players can obtain while playing. Each axe has its own texture and/or design as well as stats that affect the amount of damage on a particular tree(s). Six axes are currently available year-round, with an additional number of axes available throughout the game's history. While these particular axes can no longer be obtained through in-game store, they can be traded through other players.

Stores[]

Stores sell different items for players to advance or decorate their base. There are currently 7 stores in the game, and the most known store, being located right in front of the spawn point, is Wood R Us. It sells many items that both starters and professionals will need, from axes to blueprints, sawmills to wiring items and much more. Other stores include Fancy Furnishings, Boxed Cars, the Fine Arts Shop, Link's Logic and Bob's shack.

Regions[]

Unlike its predecessor, Lumber Tycoon 2 offers a large array of regions players can explore. Each region is defined to be a large, unique geographical area with its own music. Currently, the game has ten regions that fall under this category which have different regional properties which affect tree spawning. Each region has its own native tree, with some tree types growing in multiple regions.

The only trees currently not restricted to a specific region are Spook Wood and Sinister Wood, as they can grow on any part named Slate, Sand, Road or Ground.

History[]

Let's fast forward to 2015, and I get an opportunity to do the very first incubator program at Roblox, which was very, very exciting. And I decide, I'm going to try, once again, to tackle this problem, Lumber Tycoon 2... the sequel.

— Josh Sheldon, RDC 2019

Development and Alpha Stage[]

In 2015, years after Defaultio's success with Lumber Tycoon, he was given an opportunity to be part of Roblox's new incubator program, a program that gives Roblox developers an opportunity to work with Roblox to develop original games.[2] During his time in the program, Defaultio decided to revisit what made Lumber Tycoon successful. He would use that information to form the basis of Lumber Tycoon 2. Defaultio's goal was to create a game where players could invest their time by allowing creative expression and inspiration through a building system.

After getting a green light from the incubator program, Defaultio began the development of Lumber Tycoon 2 during May of 2015. After a few weeks of developing, the game was released to the public in the Alpha Testing Stage during July 2015. During this time, Lumber Tycoon 2 simply used the name "test" and was not widely known as only a few players knew of the game's existence. It would not be until the end of Alpha testing in August, 2015 where Defaultio would officially add the game name. Just hours later, the game instantly took off, claiming the number one spot on Roblox on its first day.

Beta Stage[]

During the game's Beta Testing Stage, the game would see some of its most prominent features added to the game. From August of 2015 to the end of the year, the game was given its first Halloween Event, which introduced spook and sinister trees during the month of October; as well as its first Christmas Event, adding four gifts players can purchase and wait to open on Christmas Day.

Lumber Tycoon 2 saw its largest update since its release in late January 2016, which added the Tropics and Maze, including three new trees: Cavecrawler, Koa, and Palm.

The game received another major update on June 14, 2016, adding art and logical components, found in two new shops. In addition, this update added the Silver Axe, a replacement to the Beta Axe in Wood R Us, officially marking the end of beta testing. On October 31, 2016, Lumber Tycoon 2 received its last major update of the year, a live environmental event which changed the look of the map. This event, known as the End Times, is a reoccurring event even till this day. The October update also added the Lone Cave, a region under the bridge that contained a new tree nicknamed Phantom wood. This year also marked the first Thanksgiving event, by releasing a turkey into Wood R Us.

In 2017, Lumber Tycoon 2 had its first of two official Roblox events, the 2017 Winter Games. During the event, a new tree type labeled Glowing Fir started to spawn in the Taiga. Players had to collect and dispense this wood into a drop-off bin next to a newly added cabin which still remains in the game. Filling the drop-off bin rewarded players with a badge and ski accessory.

After the event, the game began seeing far less frequent updates. While Defaultio started putting effort into a new project, a few noteworthy updates have come around. On September 23, Defaultio added a new quality of life feature which allowed players "the power to build with ease." In 2018, Glowing Fir made a permanent reappearance in solidarity of the late Ticktatwert, a prominent and influential YouTuber of Lumber Tycoon 2. This year also saw the completion of the Taiga Peak region, introducing frost trees. January 5, 2020 saw the addition of three buy-to-accelerate gamepasses and some new blueprints. On April 15, mobile support was added, allowing players to access the game anywhere. On April 15, 2021, Lumber Tycoon 2 participated in its second official Roblox event, the Metaverse Champions Event. The objective of the event was to find a chest hidden around the map. Finding the chest rewarded the player a badge. This event also prompted a revision of the game's thumbnail, slightly rotating it and adding a little logo.

Exploiting[]

During the early phases of Lumber Tycoon 2, exploiting was an extremely rare occurrence, and minimally impacted the game. Sometime during 2017, the game experienced a glitch which momentarily uncopylocked the game, allowing Roblox users to access and download the entirety of Lumber Tycoon 2. After a few months, the game began seeing an exponential rise in exploiting, exploiters wreaking havoc on others. Defaultio made numerous attempts in 2017 to patch large exploits such as duplication, teleporting, base copying, free money, etc. Unfortunately, these efforts were fruitless as new exploits and patches to existing exploits continued springing up and led to decline in Defaultio's motivation to the game.

Mid-2021 saw a small spike in permanent patches to the game, including terrain breaking and vehicle welding-to-player welding. This spike in motivation was short lived as Defaultio continued to work on projects outside of Lumber Tycoon 2 and Roblox.

The Great Patch[]

On June 24, 2022, Lumber Tycoon 2 began receiving a massive number of updates ranging from quality-of-life updates to patching major vulnerabilities. During the series of updates, many major exploits were patched including base drop, item duplication, base wiping, item leaking, and much more. In addition to these patches, three new cheat detection bans were added, including "HN" (High Net, possible of having too many items and little/no builds), "ML" (loading a plot with 26+ slot boxes) , and "illegal metadata wipe." The huge wave of exploit and bug patches was significant enough to push most exploit developments to extinction. During the Great Patch, Defaultio created a clone of Lumber Tycoon 2 that did not have any exploit detection. This game, titled Lumber Unsecure, allowed exploiters to continue playing the game with their exploits.

The map also received a number of small tweaks, such as changing the Safari road's names in files to allow Spook to grow. Other map imperfections were fixed, such as random holes and floating parts. More quality-of-life (QoL) features were introduced to the game, such as a visual change to structure placement, axe holding (allowing players to cut trees while holding down the click button), instant initialization, faster logic speeds, Q/E item rotation, and more. The Great Patch suddenly ended on June 18th, with the release of the new settings tab, a replacement for whitelist/blacklist.

Thumbnails[]

Up until March 7th, 2023, Lumber Tycoon 2 used the same 3 thumbnails uploaded over 8 years ago in 2015. The original thumbnails were designed in Blender by Defaultio. They showcase different angles of the user EpikYummeh's base. When Defaultio created the thumbnails, the save instance he uploaded to blender lost its color info. Despite this, Defaultio went forward with creating the thumbnails, re-adding the colors manually himself. Because he was only estimating what the colors should look like, some colors in the final thumbnails include coloring that is not consistent with what is seen in-game. The most notable discoloration is that of the roof of the structure, which appears to be made of Gold Wood, despite the original building having a roof filled with Oak Wood. The older thumbnails were also much darker and only included a small section of the map.

The 2023 Thumbnail Remaster[]

On March 7th, 2023, the game received a sudden thumbnail refresh that included a remaster of the 2021 icon, a refresh of the 3 existing 2015 thumbnails, and 3 new thumbnails showcasing other aspects of the game. The new icon and thumbnails were created by the wiki user RandomFlowz, who can be consequentially be seen in the Game Credits under the Icon / thumbnail graphics section. The refreshed thumbnails kept the gold roof of the old thumbnails despite not being true to the real building, because it was decided that the Gold Wood roof had become too iconic. More recent items can be seen in the thumbnails, such as the Koa Wood on the conveyors on the first and second remastered thumbnails, and the Spook Wood that can be seen in the third remastered thumbnail. That image also includes a few other newer items, such as the Cone, the Gift of Enchanted Tales, and the Tall Gift of Stripes. RandomFlowz did this to emphasize the fact that they are up to date. All of the thumbnails include a remastered Lumber Tycoon 2 logo in the top left corner, which is believed to originally have been designed by Volt_Designs, who appeared in the game credits until RandomFlowz took their place.
